The downtown Athens Twilight Criterium takes place on April 29th. Once again this year, SORBA-Athens is teaming with the Twilight folks to host the Scott Bicycles Off-Road Time Trial and fat-tire criterium. The 2017 Time Trials will take place on April 29th on the trails at Trail Creek Park in Athens, GA. A new registration process will allow competitors to participate in only the Off-Road Time Trial for a reduced entry fee (only $10 through March 31st!). Competitors can still choose to compete in the Off-Road Time Trial as a qualifier for the Fat Tire Criterium in downtown Athens Saturday evening. All skill levels are welcome at the Time Trial at Trail Creek. Take advantage of the early entry fee and come out for a great time on Twilight Saturday! We will have a newly expanded Time Trial course this year. Please note that competitors will still need to purchase a one-day USAC license ($10) for this event. Please register early at the Twilight registration page. Please check this space often for updates to SORBA-Athens activities during Twilight week.
Come on out to Trail Creek for a trail building and maintenance workday. We will be finishing up the Orange/Green connector trail where it crosses the Greenway, and we will be working on the DBT/Widespread/Panic trailhead. We will even feed you. We'll bring the tools; you bring the Trail Love! We will meet on the Greenway where the Orange/Green connector crosses. Look for the SORBA tool trailer! 9am-12 Noon.
Check out the Event Page on Facebook.
SORBA-Athens will have plenty of opportunities for volunteers to help us get ready and have a great Twilight week!
*The May 1 workday at Hawkes Creek trails is CANCELLED*
Check the SORBA-Athens event calendar for up-to-date opportunities.
--We will have a Weekday Workday on Wednesday, April 27th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Trail Creek Park. We will complete the connector trail between the Green and Orange Crush trails, and we will identify spots that need attention along the Twilight Time Trial course. We will meet on the Trail Creek Greenway near the connector trail crossing.
--We will need volunteers to help the Time Trial at Trail Creek Park run smoothly. We will need help during on-site registration (7:15am to 10:15am) and we need course marshals during the race (three possible "shifts": Full Shift from 8:30am to 1pm; Half Shifts from either 8:30am to 10:30am OR 10:15am to 1pm.) Course marshaling is an easy and fun gig and is a great way to see the action up close. Please email Michael Day at email@example.com to volunteer during the Time Trial.
--In addition to the Mountain Bike Time Trial, there will be a cross-country Mountain Bike Race at the Hawkes Creek Trails in Ogelthorpe county on Sunday, May 8th at 12PM (register here; Moms can register free!). We need course marshals starting at 11:30am the day of the race to help with logistics on the course. Again, Please email Michael Day at firstname.lastname@example.org to volunteer during the Race.

Fat Tire Criterium Finals: 4:40 p.m. Downtown Athens
There is a NEW Time Trail Course this year! Riders will start the 2.1 mile course at the intersection of Drive-By Truckers/Widespread/Panic. Riders will race down Panic and go under the Trail Creek Street Bridge. Next they will continue through the power line clearing and turn right at the the Boyscout Bridge to head toward Trail Creek Street. Riders will then cross Trail Creek Street and continue on Drive-by Truckers until that reach the finish line at the Drive-By Truckers/Widespread/Panic intersection where they began.
Top 50 times across all categories will qualify to race in the Scott Mountain Bike Finals Criterium, which will be held on the downtown 4-corner Twilight course and will be 20K long (20 laps). Payouts will be determined based on the number of entrants.
In an effort to make this a true mountain bike race, riders will ride the same bike for the Criterium as they ride for the Time Trial, except tires may be switched out.
- Gears and chain rings can NOT be switched out.
- No drop bars will be allowed.
- Tire width has to be at least 1.5 inches.
- Slick tires are allowed.
- Please plan to be there early so that they can stay on schedule.
Day of registration starts at 7:30 a.m. Racing starts at 9 a.m. Only check and cash will be accepted as payment on Saturday for on-site registration.
You can pre-register online. There is a $10 late fee for day-of registration. Any racer who does not have a USAC license will have to purchase a $10 1-day license onsite.

Trails make a positive impact on your local community. If you doubt that, check out the message below that we recently received from a local mountain biker. If you want to help build, expand, and maintain local trail systems, consider volunteering with or donating to your local SORBA Chapter.
"I just wanted to reach out and say thank you to all of those that have helped build over at Trail Creek. I started riding over there in April and I make it a point, weather willing, to get over there every week. As of this morning, I've lost just over 108 pounds by pursuing a sport I hold very dear to my heart. Having a sanctuary like Trail Creek helped make this journey so much easier. I can't say thank you enough to all the wonderful people that keep it so beautiful over there! Thanks so much!!! Those trails inspire really great things!"
We have some great events that are open to the public during this visit from the International Mountain Bicycling Association Trail Care Crew.

Yes, we know it's Halloween, but we promise to have you home hours before Trick-or-Treating starts! Please come out to the Trail Creek Trails on Saturday with the kids in tow (plus their bikes and helmets!). We will meet at the "gravel triangle" on the Green trail at Trail Creek Park in Athens. The gravel triangle can be easily accessed from the Trail Creek Greenway; just look for the access trail entrance near where the Greenway ends at Trail Creek St. (check out the Trail Map here) Bike-friendly costumes are encouraged (something that won't get caught in chains, etc.), and the event gets under way at 10AM. We will lead rides on our beginner-friendly Green trail and the intermediate Orange Crush trail, and we will feed you, too! https://www.facebook.com/events/905928539443887/
