Recreation Ale Party Tonight!
When: Firday, Aug 9th 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Where:
Terrapin Brewery, Athens GA (Driving Directions)
SORBA-Athens will be a guest of honor at the first ever Recreation Ale Event at Terrapin tonight. Other local organizations that promote outdoor recreation such as BikeAthens, Georgia River Network, and The Broad River Outpost will be there as well. This will be the first time that Recreation Ale is available on the tour.  There will also be specialty casks and live music. We will have a tent set up and will be flying our new banner.  Look for the SORBA-Athens logo. Come out and have a beer with us!

Social Ride/Cookout at EACP/Trail Creek
When: Monday, August 12th, 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Where: East Athens Community, Athens, GA (Driving Directions)
This is a short easy trail that is fast, flowy and a lot of fun.  A full lap of both loops and the connector is less than 2 miles so we do laps and sometimes change up the route. Show up anytime between 6 and 8:30 p.m. and ride laps at your leisure. If you don't see us at the trailhead when you arrive, wait a few minutes and you can join us on the next lap. We're firing up the grill too. We'll cook some all beef dogs, a few veggie dogs, and beer brats.  We'll have a full water cooler in case you need a refill. Come out and ride laps and then grab a dog or brat and chips when you're done. Please do not park in front of the house across the street from the trail head. Park in the parking spots inside the park here (at the green arrow). You can find more info on EACP and other trails in the Athens area on our Trails Page.

Work Parties
Trail Creek/EACP
When: Saturday, August 24th, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Where: East Athens Community, Athens, GA (Driving Directions)
This workday will be part of the Dawg Days of Service. We should have around 15 volunteers from UGA helping out. Overgrowth is starting to become an issue so the main goal will be corridor clearing on both the Green and Orange Crush loops. We will also address any drainage issues and may start some corridor clearing on the new Phase 2 section if we have enough new trail flagged by then. Bring gloves, a water bottle, and your bike. We will ride after we finish working.

Hard Labor Creek (Lunch Provided)
When: , Saturday, September 14th,  10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Where: Hard Labor Creek State Park, Rutledge, GA (Driving Directions)
Hard Labor Creek will be a big part of our 30/30 Project. It's only 28 miles from Athens. Bill Pflueger has done a great job spearheading the effort so far. We want to give him a hand and spread the word about this trail system. There's around 10 miles of trail built already with enough land to build more. We'll be working on the Blue Trail, which will eventually become a 7 mile loop. After we finish working lunch will be provided for our volunteers courtesy of the Friends of Hard Labor Creek. Also, for every volunteer hour logged the Friends of Hard Labor organization will donate $2 to the trail building efforts at the park. With a good turnout we can get a lot of work done and raise a lot of money for future trail building. If you want to support our 30/30 Project, this is an important workday to attend. Bring gloves, a water bottle, and your bike. We will ride after we finish working and have lunch.

Training:
Want to learn how to build sustainable trails?  Here are some great resources:

IMBA's Sustainable Trail Building Overview.

IMBA's Guide to Building Sweet Singletrack.  The book costs $40 and is a great investment, but we'll loan you our copy for a bit if you want to give it a read.

IMBA's Trail Building Class on Video (9 part series).  If you watch the videos and use IMBA's Guide to Building Sweet Singletrack (see above) as a reference, you will get the same information provided in the IMBA/Subaru Trail Building Class.

You can find out more about SORBA-Athens including info on how to join SORBA/IMBA on our club info page.  Membership comes with several benefits including a dvd, a magazine subscription, and discounts from many top biking companies.  Membership is as low as $20 for youth/students under 24, $30 for individuals, and $50 for families.  A big chunk of your membership fee goes right back into building trails in the Athens area.  You can also help us raise money by purchasing SORBA-Athens' own special blend of Jittery Joe's Coffee (Singletrack Mind): $12 each or $10 for SORBA-Athens members.

SORBA-Athens Contributors: Sunshine Cycles, Krimson Kafe, Ben's Bikes, The Hub, Mama's Boy, New Balance Shoes, Steak and Shake, Keba, Barberitos, Athens Bagel Co, Fuzzy's Taco Shop, Home Depot, Trader Joe's,  Chain Buster Racing, Weevil, Tifosi, Cast Iron Bakery, and Pro Gold.  We appreciate the support.  Special thanks to The Grill, The Royal Peasant,  Five Points Growlers, and Terrapin Brewing Company, who have all made very generous donations.  Please show your appreciation by patronizing these businesses and thank them on behalf of SORBA-Athens.  As always, huge thanks to our volunteers.
